Waragi sends to death 4 people in Rukungiri

At least four people have died after consuming a suspected contaminated  local brew commonly known as (Waragi) which they nicknamed  Omukuranza in Nyakishenyi Sub-county Rukungiri district in a period of one month.


The Nyakishenyi Sub County Chairperson, Wednesday Twinomujuni said that yesterday the local Waragi is made from unidentified chemicals which are later mixed with crude alcohol to form that dangerous alcohol known as “omukuranza” which means uprooting private hair.

He said those who died had similar symptoms of acute headaches, stomach pain and vomiting. He said that the deadly local brew is sold in small jerricans after mixing it.

He said a small glass for that alcohol goes for shs1000 which is twice as much to normal crude waragi that is sold at shs 500 the same glass.
According to Twinomujuni, Omukuranza is currently being brewed in the villages of omukagaana, Kakyenkye, Bikongozo, Katonya, Kiganda and other parts of Nyakishenyi Sub County.
The Rukungiri acting District Police commander, Edwin Atukunda confirmed the arrest of one suspected dealer in unauthorised local brew which he said the investigations into the matter has started.
