Former Allied Democratic Forces – ADF combatants in Rwenzori Region are seeking support from the government to enrol on adult learning programs.
In their meeting with officials from the Amnesty Commission Uganda and the Operation Wealth Creation – OWC in Kasese district, these combatants say most of them are illiterate, which has affected their day-to-day implementation of government-supported economic activities.
These groups are asking the government to introduce adult literacy training centres in local communities to help those willing to study.
Ronald Ssekatawa, the Coordinator Amnesty Commission Uganda – western region, says the ex-combatants’ illiteracy has frustrated their efforts to support their lives, adding that the commission has no mandate to support them acquire formal education.
