The Uganda Human Rights Commission –UHRC has called for the establishment of free internet access facilities in all districts of Uganda.
The comes as Uganda prepares to join the rest of the world to celebrate the International Day for Universal Access to Information on September 28, under the theme: The Right to Know: Building Back Better with Access to Information.
Meddie Mulumba, the acting Chairperson of UHRC says the growing use of online media is increasingly creating space for abuse of the rights provided for by both the national laws and the UN conventions.
The State Minister for National Guidance Godfrey Baluku Kabbyanga recapped the government’s commitment to upholding the provisions of these national and international laws but insisted this should not be enjoyed by violating other rights of other people, like privacy and security.
The international day also comes at a time the government is enduring criticism over its handling of social media, including an eight-month ban on Facebook.
