Two mental health rehabilitation centres have been established in Ibanda Municipality, at Buhumuriro Upper trading centre in Kagongo and Kyaruhanga near Ibanda town to ease access to mental health services and address the knowledge gap.
Innocent Mujuni, the in-charge of Mental Health Gap programme in western Uganda notes that people now don’t have to go to Butabika Hospital for mental health related treatment.
He says the newly mental health centres are working with Butabika to help people manage mental health problems. Mujuni, a psychiatrist at Uganda Martyrs Ibanda Hospital Kagongo, says that mental health has been neglected with many communities, including in Ankore where people consider it as witchcraft and curses.
